Shared Spaces Project

We are delighted to inform you that we will be delivering the ESOL Shared Spaces project for Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, as part of the Our Community, Our Future programme.

The project will be to support the borough’s social integration work, bringing together ESOL and the beautiful shared spaces we have in Blackburn with Darwen.

The aim is to deliver a holistic English language programme, so the participants build confidence with using local facilities and services and feel more empowered and comfortable to fully engage in local life. They will get to know the area beyond their immediate neighbourhood and make new friends, alongside improving their English skills.

The course will cover different topics around getting to know your neighbourhood, which will include theory around these topics and then practical application through visits and role play. Themes covered by the course support social integration and include:

  • Using the library
  • Shopping expedition at a local supermarket
  • Emergency services, including visiting a healthcare centre and fire station.
  • Exploring museums
  • Learn how to use a local bus or train
  • Visit the Mayor’s Parlour and Town Hall
  • Experience outdoor activities, such as visiting the local park

Learners will also be able to participate in activities around creative arts, which will enable them to explore their artistic skills and encourage them to work in groups in a relaxed environment.

We aim to run the sessions on:

  • Mondays around shared spaces
  • Wednesdays around creative arts
